Arthur Schoenstadt says that “exercise is one of the most effective ways to prevent obesity”. The main idea is to inform his readers the best way to prevent obesity. His purpose is to explain how exercise is the best way to prevent obesity. He talks about conflicting evidence; he says a healthy diet and exercise can help prevent obesity. The text structure he is using to help support his purpose is a description. The author thinks that obesity is an issue in America and he thinks exercise is the solution. The author uses words like “Best”, “Most effective”, to make the reader interested.
Diet:
Weight Watchers says that their “diet” is the solution (to prevent obesity). Their purpose is to persuade people to buy their product. The main idea of weight watchers is to prevent obesity in America . They use a description to hook you on their large amount of clients and success stories. Their website does not show conflicting evidence because their website is all about their products. In the articles on the Weight Watchers website they use interesting words and say things such as “get the weight-loss edge” and “simple, satisfied and smart”. They use Ethos to persuade you to buy and use their product by using Jennifer Hudson (American Idol star) as their cover girl. So this makes you think “If she can do it” because she is a famous singer you can do it too.
Exercise and Diet:
The balancing act says “a healthy diet and exercise will keep you in shape and away from obesity within yourself and your children”. The purpose of their website is to prevent childhood obesity, The main idea is that obesity starts in childhood so it is good to prevent it early. The sequence the balancing act uses, gives you a full 8 steps on how to prevent obestiy. The author does not have to use conflicting evidence because they have no competition. Their connotation makes you think they are professional or an expert in that subject. They use ethos and logos to persuade you to diet and exercise to prevent obesity. They use ethos by using TV stars. They use logos by stating statistics about obesity.
